OzgenFor a male dancer he is brilliant, very mesmerising (not sure if I've spelt that correct) to watch. The way he does the fluttering just under his rib cage is fantastic. I have been attempting to do it, but can't. I try it laying down and standing up and I think, Yes! I'm doing it. BUT, then when I go to have a look at whats happening in a mirror there is no fluttering, not even a flut.

I can only do a flutter by cutting off my breath from my throat (does that make sense?) So it means I can only do it for so long before I start seeing stars!!

There were some very excited ladies on my table at the Grand Hafla when Ozgen was performing I can tell you!!!

I know what you mean. I think most ofl the ladies around me were all wide eyed.
I have to hold my breath too, otherwise I get no where near. Will have to keep practicing.

And he's coming to teach a workshop for us in October.
I've asked him to teach flutters and shimmies and pops - all the stuff he's so fab at.
I think we may need smelling salts on hand just in case though...

Oh, and on the fluttering. It's a weird thing, but yes, you do need to sort of cut off the breath. So Jewel you're doing it right but you won't be able to do it for long.
Princess Farhana - the queen of the flutter - told me she learned by lying on her back with a book on her tummy and making the book bounce up and down! Interestingly, she says she doesn't cut the breath off.
Aziza, who tried to teach me for years and finally achieved it in January (!) got me on all fours with my belly hanging down (not a nice look) and then got me to sort of bounce my upper abdominal muscles up against the diaphragm. Aziza does cut the breath off - at the bottom of the throat.
It's very similar to a shimmy in that you need the same sort of odd mix of relaxation and slight tension to make it happen. And like with a shimmy its just down to practice, practice, practice. Very frustrating until you get it - it foxed me for years!

OMG Princess Farhana just does the best flutter ever!!!!!
After her workshop last year I tried laying down with a book on my tummy - I got it going really well and weirdly enough didn't need to cut off my breath? The minute I stand up however not only is it harder to get the movement really going but I had to cut off my breath again? Weird?... It does look great though!

I am now going to try the lying down with the book. Sounds good to me. Am I right in saying that all you do is tense and relax the upper abdominal muscles?!?

No, you actually try to push the abs out (or upwards if you are lying down!) and then pull them (or relax them) in.
Princess Farhana taught herself after she had been in a bad car accident and could hardly walk, let alone dance. She was so bored she thought she'd teach herself something whilst lying down! So she worked on her flutters and then learned how to layer a bellyroll onto a flutter. So that's your next task after you've mastered the flutter

Oh I see, have just tried it and still can't get the hang of it. I guess it's just something that takes a lot of practice.
(While I have your attention, Char, can you put Lucy Morrison down for a DVD of the show? Forgot to do it last night).
